Web Hosting Services – Finding a Good Web Hosting Provider

June 30th, 2009

After designing amazing web pages, the next option before any business is to find a credible web hosting. The future of any website is definitely decided by the quality of the service provider. Therefore, you should exercise a due amount of prudence before choosing the right kind of hosting company and the following factors should be taken into consideration:

  • Research is of quite significance before choosing any service provider. Look for the rankings in hosting directories or review forums to come with an optimum answer. There are two choices that are available for any Webmaster which are dedicated web hosting and reseller web hosting. Some prefer the former due to its advantages like a committed and unshared bandwidth, excellent customers support, data security, higher uptime, advanced domain knowledge and practical and reliable web hosting plans.
  • Another advantage of a committed server is its ability to provide the user with an enormous amount of bandwidth and disk space. It is very necessary that you have an optimum idea of all your future requirements before going for a service provider. In the business of online sales, an interactive website can be a great marketing tool. One can have user-friendly accessories on the site like shopping carts and dynamic design templates enhancing the look of the site. With a dedicated server, you can be really sure that there will not be any problems in the future up gradation of the web site as per the needs of the business.
  • It is necessary that a service package makes use of advanced database driven software like PHP, Perl and SQL to optimize the functionality of the site. Ready made scripts are a must for any site today due to the need to have extensive customer databases, which necessities the use of these kinds of software.
  • The bandwidth is a very important factor that ensures the amount of traffic that you can pull towards the site. Without a bandwidth larger than 5GB, your online audience will not be sustainable. Look for a website hosting service that provides an operating system suiting the needs of your pocket. A Linux based operating system as compared to the one running on windows would be quite an affordable option for you.
  • A site that is always available for the users is a boon for any online business. Without continuous accessibility, high traffic and sales become a tough job. If a service provider is not able to provide higher uptime to the users, then it is better to switch to another company in time. Security is one of the key attributes a good website service provider. With hackers stealing important data from you site like customer’s personal details, it is important to restrict the site to authorized users.
  • Technical support and regular server maintenance also needs to be mentioned in this context without which a website cannot be continuously accessible to the user. A Webmaster needs to ensure that a continuous 24/7 telephonic support is promised in the package.

The choice for a dedicated or reseller web hosting lies in the hands of a Webmaster, and the benefits have to be weighed against the costs and the needs.

Common Web Hosting Service Features

June 30th, 2009

Web hosting is a broad term used to describe the act of storing web files on a web server so that they can be viewed by people on the Internet or an intranet. There are many different configurations and options available when it comes to how you decide to host your web files. Regardless of which method you choose, you should understand the basics of whats involved and what you should get with any web hosting service.

A web server is a computer that is continuously connected to the Internet and has special sever software (most commonly Apache web server) that reads hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) requests from client side programs (such as web browsers), processes the request and sends either the requested file or resource, or any error codes in an HTTP response. You store your web files on the servers hardrive. A web file is most commonly an HTML file but can also include dynamic content files such as PHP files.  Web hosting services will specify the amount of disk space or storage that you get when you use their hosting services. This is a measurement of how much space you are allowed for your files on their hard drive and is usually measured in gigabytes.

Data transfer, or bandwidth is the terms web hosting companies use to refer to how much information you are allowed to send through their server connections each month. If you have a web file that is one megabyte, each time someone downloads or views that file you send one megabyte of information through the connection. Since most web files are relatively small, disk storage and bandwidth are not usually needed in huge amounts. The exceptions apply to sites that get a lot of traffic and contain a lot of large multimedia files such as videos.

Any web hosting service you sign up with should have the ability to process dynamic content. Dynamic content is a web file that contains scripting languages such as php, where code contained in the file will determine what the web server sends in the response to the browser. This allows data and information to be loaded from a database and displayed to the user, or to process user data from form input. This differs from static content such as a plain HTML file that is written and always displayed the same regardless of who views the content, sort of like a painting.

Almost all web hosting services should come equipped with php, MySQL and other popular dynamic content utilities. They should also feature  FTP account/ access to allow you to transfer your files to the web server from your development computer, an online control panel that allows you to manage your account and files and tools to measure your bandwidth usage and the disk space that you have used.

Some additional features that are being offered on shared hosting plans include online web page builders that allow you to created web pages in a what you see is what you get (WYSIWYG) interface. This makes it easy for people with little or no understanding of HTML to create quality web sites with ease.

When making your choice between web hosting companies the things that matter most will be the kind of customer and technical support that you receive. As a beginner, being able to get a human on the other end of the phone who knows whats going on well enough to easily guide you through it is an amazing value. If it comes down to a hosting company that offers “unlimited” storage and transfer but isn’t there to answer your questions, and one that offers “only” 10 gigabytes of storage but is highly reputable and has great customer support, the obvious choice would be to go with the support.

Ecommerce Webhosting

June 30th, 2009

In ecommerce or ebusiness just like the regular offline businesses keep costs down is crucial and vital part of sustaining longevity in any industry. Hence hosting an ecommerce webhosting by the company sometimes might not be the most cost effective ways of running a business. The reason because you need to have dedicated servers to serve the company’s ecommerce webhosting needs, also the company might also need to have the necessary employees or human capital to be able to manage to run the company’s ecommerce webhosting efficiently. Not to mention there is also a learning curve and time invested to get the webhosting up and running.

A better solution would be to engage webhosting service providers that provide ecommerce web hosting services. There are a variety of ecommerce web hosting service providers available online. The problem most companies face is which one. It is definitely important to choose the appropriate ecommerce webhosting service, especially if your business website requires secure data or financial transactions.

There are several factors that you may wish to consider when selecting an ecommerce web hosting.

  1. Firstly an ecommerce webhosting should have adequate bandwidth. This is a necessity as no business would like to be caught in the situation where clients are unable to download information or access the company’s website because the bandwidth allocated is exceeded. Nowadays there are tons of webhosting providers providing unlimited bandwidths and unlimited web space. There are also dedicated servers, VPS solutions too.
  2. Redundancy, backup and reliability are also crucial factors. There are definitely no perfect solutions however, do look out for webhostings that provide constant backups and standby systems to ensure that your website is up and running at most times.
  3. Also do take note of important ecommerce features such as software, scripts that support the installation and running of shopping carts, catalogue and database capabilities.
  4. Lastly the ecommerce web hosting should ensure that any transaction be it information transfer or financial transfer, the data is secure. Currently the standard is for the webhosting to provide for Secure Sockets Layer or SSL encryption.

In all an ecommerce web hosting should be secure with back-end integration capabilities such as integrating with inventory, accounting and data systems at an affordable price. Usually how much the ecommerce webhosting cost is depends on the number of features and sophistication that the company needs.

Top 10 Worst Hosting Support Responses

June 30th, 2009

If you have ever had web hosting before, I am sure that you have had to deal with the tech support department at some point for various issues. Probably the most common problem faced by website owners is not being able to see or get to your website. So when faced with this problem the first thing you do is contact the support department. But sometimes they are not always so helpful.

Below are what I feel were the worst replies that we have come across when dealing with this specific issue from various hosting support departments.

(These are in order of least to worst)

10. Thank you for holding, all our reps are assisting other customers. we appreciate your patience. (this continues for 30 minutes to an hour)

9. Have you tried restarting your computer?

8. Have you tried clearing your browser cache?

7. This is a web browser issue and not a hosting issue

6. There is nothing wrong with the server you are on

5. You need to submit a ticket with our exact problem so we can help you better

4. Sorry, I am only level 1 support. You will need to contact our level 2 support.

3. Are you sure you have hosting with us?

2. Your website is coming up just fine for me

1. ………. (getting no response at all)

I am sure some will chuckle after reading these but I know some will cringe because they will have undoubtedly received some of these responses. Names of the hosting companies were left out because, to be fair, it depends on the individual rep and not the overall company that would give these responses….at least that’s what we would hope.
