  1. Hi JSGKB24,
Domain name like your company name. You need to register and renew it every years.
Google and Yahoo pay for their domain name:
    * Google – Registrar: MARKMONITOR INC., Expiration Date: 2011-09-14, Creation Date: 1997-09-15, Last Update Date: 2008-11-18
    * Yahoo – Registrar: MARKMONITOR INC., Expiration Date: 2012-01-19, Creation Date: 1995-01-18, Last Update Date: 2008-11-18
Web hosting sites make money by selling hosting space, advertisement, and other backend services. Some have provide professional web design for it’s customers and some not. The customer will subscribe to this hosting service and pay it for every month or year.

The cost of a domain name mostly pays for the computerized “recordkeeping” that is required to make sure the domain is registered to only one person or company. Google and Yahoo pay just like everyone else for their domain name. Web hosting companies make money over time by dividing up the resources of computers they own to many users. This does take time, but most people once they register with a webhost they don’t change it so for example a 1000 people paying 5 or 10 dollars a month for years and years is ALOT of money!
