So say i set up dcpromo and install AD and a DC and set it a domain name of say mydom.local.
I then install DNS and it asks for a forward lookup zone name does that name have to be mydom.local also?

“Forward Lookup Zone” defines a zone that does host name to IP translation. If you are setting up a domain, then yes, you’ll need a forward lookup zone for the domain name (mydom.local) so that names like ‘server.mydom.local’ can be resolved to and Ip address, such as ’192.168.1.1′. Often, networks are setup so that the servers have a static IP address, and workstations are dynamic, getting their info from a DHCP server. The DHCP server is usually set up to send updates to the DNS server.
A “Reverse Lookup Zone” goes the other way — given an IP address, it returns a host name. It’s usually not necessary to set up a reverse lookup zone.
