Would it be better to have a website domain name with a .NET extension or a longer domain name with a .COM? For example, the domain I wanted to register, let’s call it ABCD.COM was already taken but ABCD.NET was available. Would it be better to use ABCD.NET or the longer AssociatedBusinessCompanyDoc.COM for marketing purposes. Which would people “identify” with better?

If you buy the .net and the .com is already registered then you may be pushing vital traffic away because people automaticaly type .com.
.net domains are only good with catchy (short) domain names that people will remember easy.
As stated before you could buy both then wait and see if the .com comes up next renewal (could be value in it anyway if the .com is popular).
My advice….
Look for a name that has all the major extentions and build a good solid brand. Long names are ok as long as they have relevance to your keywords, people don’t type domains much now the are te bookmarking sites anyway..

IMO, you are probably better off with the longer .com, because so many people use .com without thinking.
However, most nowadays depend on search engines and links to find their way to a domain, that the domain name is not nearly as important as it use to be. Often I know the domain name and still google it.
All in all, I don’t think it is going to make that big of a difference.
I prefer .com extensions.

.COM is preferred over .NET.
I’m not sure how long “long” is but unless your company has a very well known nickname (like “Coke” or “NFL”), the full name is better anyway.
I would say that after .COM would be .US (or wherever you’re doing business), with .NET or .BIZ in 3rd.
.com is more widely know, but .net isn’t far behind. the actual content portion of the address ie the abcd in http://www.abcd.com is more important than the domain suffix
Frankly, I’d register both. Domain names are cheap enough that it shouldn’t be an issue. I’d also look into registering some common misspellings as well.
