I noticed that Yahoo, 1and1, and a few other sources offer web hosting services (paid services) that include a free domain name.
Who owns the domain name (me or Yahoo, etc.) assuming I sign up for one of the paid hosting plans?

you own the domain name,
it is just a sales gimmick that almost all hosting do,
it actually cost 3 to 7 dollar a year so it is easy for them to pay for it.
sometime it is harder but not impossible to move the domain to another hosting service because they have “insurance” that nobody will take your domain name. so they “lock” it
but if it is register to you, you own it.
I have a domain name by taking the Yahoo Geocities Pro plan and I think that I own it but I’m not really sure. I’ve had it for years but am embarrassed to say that I really don’t know what the story is on that. I’ll watch this thread to see if we can both find out.
You own the domain as long you pay for web hosting but if you want to move it out of Yahoo , you are in trouble, you can find step by step guide on how to create a website at website like http://www.aplis.net/ .
You do.
So if you quit before 12 months is up or whatever your contract is, they’ll just charge you a “breaking contract” fee.
Remember, they have your credit card number.
